Reading The Gospels During Lent

20150813_212401

I have neglecting my time of reading God’s word far too much lately.  This Lenten season I want to be in the Word and today I decided to read through the Gospels as part of my Lenten Journey.  If you want to join me I will be sharing some thoughts through the week about what I am seeing and learning.  You can also print off this PDF I made based on the break up of the readings.  I pray you all can hold me accountable for reading God’s Word this Lenten season.  Have a great day and may your Lenten Journey to the cross remind you of the great love Jesus has for you and me.

Why I do short term mission trips!

13669483_1034413473341153_4222543289091791589_o

I know some in the youth ministry world are against short term mission projects.  They say things like the people don’t need your help, or if you don’t have a long term relationship nothing really changes.  Going to some far off place is nice but you have needs in your community that should be served first. I have a different view on these types of trips.

About a week ago I spent 8 days with students, parents and 300 other kids I had never met before to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the community of Prince George, Virginia. This is my 12th week long mission trip as a leader. I did 4 as a high school student and one trip for 3 weeks in high school as well. I can say without a doubt I am a week long mission junkie.  I love it and honestly the couple of summers I didn’t get to do it my whole year felt off somehow.  You may be thinking how can one week of service really do that.

For the last 13 years I have gone on these trip through an organization called Group Mission trips.  They are a fantastic organization to work with mostly because they do two things really well.  First the work is all set up.  They screen residents, plan the jobs we will be doing, and provide directions for all the projects.  This is no small task.   I have never in 13 years had an issues with work not needing to be done or trivial.  We make a real difference in the lives of those people we come in contact with.  Second they help my students and I get out of our comfort zone through breaking us up into crews of kids we have never met before.  It is a brilliant system because if doesn’t just get you to meet other students. By taking you out of your comfort zone it helps students and adults to have confidence to get to know others in their own youth group.   I cant say enough about the system and what they do.

Lastly Mission trips like this put everything into perspective for me as a follower of Jesus.  You see when you get to know a resident for a week you get to know them and their life story if you are willing to listen.  You often hear stories of brokenness, death, and sin.  You meet people who have never had anyone to listen to them, people who have never heard anyone care for them for no other reason that this guy named Jesus.  It is truly a powerful experience.  These experiences help put life in perspective for me.  It helps me walk back into my community and have empathy for my neighbor.  They help me see all people as if they were Jesus.

So today as you walk around, take the time to hear your neighbor, hear the person who is next to you in line at the grocery story and care for them.  Ask how you can help.  Share about this Jesus guy who helps you get through this life.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

Matthew 25:34-35 NIV

Best job in the world…walking with people

Today I was reminded of why I haIMG_20160217_213239ve the best job in the world.  Yesterday I spoke in chapel, and preached for our Lent services at St. John.  Although it is truly an honor to stand up front and point people to Jesus, it is not what gets me through the day.  It is not what I truly treasure about my job. My greatest joy isn’t teaching a bible class or preaching up front.  My greatest joy is walking with, talking with, listening to, and praying with those God has placed in front of me.

Today was a great day.  Most of it wasn’t what I planned to do today.  The first was praying for a friend I work with. She was in need today and taking the time with a few others to pray for her reminded me why I love my job.  It is ok to be sad with them and seek to see God’s work in a tough situation.

The second was another instance where someone asked me about an issue they were having with a child they knew.  We walked through some very difficult stuff.  Through it all I was reminded of something the first Pastor I served with told me.  After 31 years in ministry he said “Steve I have preached many sermons in my day. People don’t remember the sermons or the bible studies, people remember the times you sat with them in their time of need.”  Those words are words I have modeled my ministry on.  It isn’t about being up front in the lime light or being the funniest guy it the world it is about being there for people and sharing Jesus.

This week as you go about your day please remember that.  Please remember that people will not remember what you did for the group.  They don’t remember the speeches they remember the times you stopped to listen to them, stopped to pray with them, and the times you lifted them up when they were down.  Paul wrote it this way.

“so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.  If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”

1 Cor. 12:25-27 NIV

So let us rejoice together, let us suffer together as the body of Christ lifting each other up one person at a time.

Dress Up…Sharing the Joy of Knowing Christ!

2016-01-27 23.36.53 1I like to dress up for Lutheran schools week.  My goal each year for this week is to dress up as much as possible. I am all about “going big or going home”.  My favorite part is watching peoples reactions when I walk in the building. I know I look like a nut. I know I should probably never go out in public like this but I do.  I do it all because I love to draw attention to myself….(ok that sounds really narcissistic when you write it that way but keep reading so you don’t think too poorly of me.)

The reason I dress this way is so you notice me.  I want you to notice me SO THAT I can share with you this guy who has made me nuts.  This guy who made me dress up in costumes, dye my hair pink and go all out for Lutheran Schools weeks each year.  I want you to know this Jesus guy who ruined my life SO THAT I can no longer miss opportunities to share with you Jesus. The one who loved me so much He gave Himself for me.  He loved me.  This awkward kid who was not the coolest kid in the world.  A guy who was bald and 26 and has very little filter when talking with others.  A guy who is trying to follow Jesus.

So tomorrow or the next day when you see me walking around its ok to stare.  I don’t mind if you laugh.  I don’t mind much of anything.  I just hope you know I really am not doing these crazy things for me. I am doing them SO THAT you might know Jesus and the joy he gives me every day.  So lets all think about ways we can share Jesus and the joy we have in Him.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 NIV

Confirmation…invite them back to the family of faith.

This past Sunday I got to experience one of my greatest moments as a Dad.  My daughter stood before the congregation of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Big Rapids Michigan and confessed her faith in Jesus.  It was an amazing moment in her faith life and I couldn’t be prouder.  Standing next to her while she did it will be something I cherish for a long long time.

Confirmation is an important event. Sometimes I think we forget the importance of this event.  It isn’t however the end of our faith journey.  For some this can seem like graduation from our time of formal education with the scriptures.  I have heard is said by adults “I learned all I needed to about the scriptures in confirmation so I don’t need to go to bible study!”  My response typically to this lovely moment is you must have miss understood what confirmation is all about.  You must have thought confirmation was about making sure you know everything in the Bible! (This by the way isn’t even possible in a two year program) Heck I studied the bible for four years in college and can tell you with out a doubt in my mind,  I know very little. So confirmation is not about teaching you everything but about teaching you what you will be confessing before the Church.

You see Confirmation from a Lutheran perspective is standing before the congregation and confirming what God promised to do to you in your baptism.  God promised you in our baptism that he would bring you and conform you to himself. He would connect you forever with Jesus.  You are standing before God and the congregation and proclaiming you believe in the one who saved you. You are confirming your baptism is at work in you through the work of the Holy Spirit.  We have you study the scriptures so you know what that means.  Our prayer is you grow in faith more and more. You study the scriptures daily.  We pray you come to God’s house to hear his grace for you in the company of other believers, and when offered, receive the body and blood of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins.

As a dad that promise to walk with my daughter didn’t stop. I will continue to challenge her to be faithful to what she confessed. I will remind her of her baptism, continue to bring her to God’s house and remind her to partake of Jesus. She is a major part of the family of Christ.

So for those of you who are reading this and haven’t been to Church, opened your Bible or received the sacrament since confirmation I invite you back.  I invite you to remember the words of Jesus that worked in your heart that day so many years ago.  I remind you of the promise of Jesus who is going after the one lost sheep.  You are love and forgiven. In your baptism he claimed you and wants you to return.

For those reading this who have someone they love who has walked away from all this, I invite you to walk beside them.  To love and care for them enough to want to see them come back to this faith they confessed.

So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.[g] 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?[h] And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. Matthew 10:26-33 ESV
